Marilyn Charles, PhD, ABPP, authored "Working with Psychosis: A Developmental View" in
Modern Psychoanalysis.
"Conceptualizing psychosis not as a clinical disorder, the author frames it instead as a developmental position marked by disrupted links between inner experience and the social world. Drawing on psychoanalytic theory, from Lacan's notion of the psychotic position to Bion's emphasis on learning from experience, the author argues that psychotic symptoms often reflect unarticulated trauma and intergenerational transmission of meaning. Through clinical vignettes, the paper illustrates how psychoanalysis can offer a reparative space for symbolic integration by engaging the transference/countertransference field. The work emphasizes the importance of developmental attunement, epistemic trust, and cultural context in supporting those marginalized by medicalized understandings of madness."
