Eric M. Plakun, MD, is the Medical Director/CEO of the Austen Riggs Center. The Austen Riggs Center is pleased to announce the re-election of Medical Director/CEO Eric Plakun, MD, DLFAPA, FACPsych, to serve his second three-year term as the American Psychiatric Association (APA) Area 1 Trustee*.

Dr. Plakun built his re-election campaign around working within the APA to tackle problems in two domains:

  • Addressing health disparities, increasing access to care and implementing the mental health parity law by embracing the landmark verdict in Wit v United Behavioral Health

  • Identifying and addressing structural racism in the APA

You can read more about Dr. Plakun’s platform on his campaign website: www.ericplakun4area1trustee.org (site will be available to access until early March 2021).

Below is a sampling of what other APA members have to say about Dr. Plakun and his leadership:

Katherine G. Kennedy, MD
Assistant Clinical Professor, Yale University

"I have worked closely with Eric in many capacities for nearly two decades. He is a brilliant thought leader dedicated to advancing access to care, implementing parity, and reducing health disparities. Eric has a distinctive record of leadership within the APA and will work hard to address structural racism within the APA and the profession of psychiatry."

John Santopietro, MD, DFAPA
Senior Vice President, Hartford HealthCare

"I have known and worked closely with Eric for more than 20 years. It’s hard to think of anyone more committed to psychiatry (in the fullness of all that term represents). His energy for moving us forward while holding fast to core principles has already had an outsized impact on the field, and he is laser-focused on the work still to be done."

Margaret C. Tuttle, MD
Psychiatrist, Massachusetts General Hospital

"He [Eric] has been a strong and articulate representative for New England and Eastern Canada on the American Psychiatric Association’s Board of Trustees since 2018. He is a deep thinker and an action-oriented leader, with a keen intellect and a gift for communicating."

Gordon H. Clark, Jr., MD, MDiv, CPE, FACPsych, DLFAPA
Founding President, American Association for Community Psychiatry

"I have known Eric for about 40 years. He was a year ahead of me in our psychiatric residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, and he was Chair of the Committee on Ethics of the American College of Psychiatrists when I became a member of that committee. Eric is a highly skilled clinician and a proven leader who would continue to serve us and our patients well as our Area 1 Trustee."

David Mintz, MD
Director of Psychiatric Education; Associate Director of Training/Team Leader, Austen Riggs Center

"I honestly can’t say enough about what Eric has done for American Psychiatry. Not only is he a skilled therapist and biopsychosocial psychiatrist, but he has become one of our strongest voices for biopsychosocial advocacy, and one of the most effective voices advocating for mental health parity."

*Please note that these results are considered public, but not official until approved by the Board of Trustees at their March 2021 meeting.
