American Psychological Association Division 39 and their President-Elect, Marilyn Charles, Ph.D., ABPP

The American Psychological Association (APA) Division 39 (Division of Psychoanalysis) is holding its 34th annual spring meeting Wednesday, April 23 through Sunday, April 27 in New York City.

For those of you unfamiliar with Division 39, here is some background information from their website:

Founded in 1979, the Division of Psychoanalysis of the APA is the 39th Division of APA. With nearly 3000 doctoral level psychologists, graduate students and allied mental health professionals, it is one of the largest associations of psychoanalytic professionals and scholars in the world.

Division 39 president Marilyn Charles, Ph.D., ABPPDivision 39 is a “contemporary psychoanalytic and psychodynamic community that supports pluralism and diversity in practice, theory and scholarship.” What you may not know about Division 39 is that their president-elect is Marilyn Charles, Ph.D., ABPP, a staff psychologist at the Austen Riggs Center.

When asked about her new role as president of Division 39, Dr. Charles expressed a desire to “provide strong leadership and continue the efforts made by past presidents” while endeavoring to “network with other groups with shared concerns so that the shared goals and values come into focus and can be more effectively supported.”

Dr. Charles has extensive experience in leadership, both as a co-founding member of and co-chair of Division 39 Early Career Committee and also as co-chair of the Association for the Psychoanalysis of Culture and Society (APCS) since 2005. Her passionate interest in helping young people find their way into the field of psychoanalysis and into Division 39 “in a way that is important both to their future and the future of the organization” is a hallmark of Dr. Charles’ work in the education and training of the next generation of psychologists.

Her belief that “…the strength and resilience of any organization is to be able to recognize potential and support and build on it” is certain to serve her well as she embarks on this new leadership position with Division 39.

Join us in congratulating Dr. Charles on her election as president of Division 39 and, if you’re in New York City this week, stop by our exhibit booth at the APA Division 39 (Division of Psychoanalysis) 34th Annual Spring Meeting
