Supporting NAMI’s Work on the Local, State and National Stage
According to their website, NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, “is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.” Riggs’ Medical Director/CEO Andrew J. Gerber, MD, PhD, says, “Partnering with the National Alliance on Mental Illness is a key priority for the Austen Riggs Center.”
To that end, Riggs is currently supporting NAMI’s work at the local, state and national levels:
Riggs is a proud sponsor of the local Berkshire County chapter of NAMI and, as a sponsor, has participated in two local NAMI events this year:
- On Thursday, February 4, a team of Riggs community members joined NAMI Berkshire County for their 2nd Annual Cupcake Wars Fundraiser, which raised nearly $8,000 to support Berkshire County individuals and families impacted by mental illness.
- On Thursday, May 19, a team of Riggs community members joined NAMI Berkshire County for their 11th Annual Minds Matter Walk for Mental Health Awareness in Pittsfield, MA. As one of the honorary chairs of the event, Dr. Gerber spoke and walked at the event.
In April, Dr. Gerber signed on as a "CEO Against Stigma," as part of a NAMI Mass campaign "to change attitudes within Massachusetts workplaces by securing the commitment of business leaders." Read more about the campaign and Dr. Gerber’s and Riggs’ involvement.
Austen Riggs staff members will be attending and exhibiting at the NAMI National Convention, July 6-9 in Denver, Colorado. Read more about NAMI’s 2016 National Convention.
With state and local chapters across the country, there are a wide variety of ways for both individuals and organizations to support NAMI. Find out more on the NAMI National website at: www.nami.org/Get-Involved.
