Riggs-Yale Presenters Pay Tribute to Sidney J. Blatt, Ph.D.
The 2014 Riggs-Yale Conference on Early Adversity and Developmental Psychopathology began this morning on a somber note. The opening remarks from Jane G. Tillman, Ph.D., Conference Director and Director of the Erikson Institute and Linda C. Mayes, M.D., conference presenter and professor at the Child Study Center at the Yale School of Medicine paid tribute to Sidney J. Blatt, Ph.D. who passed away on May 11. Dr. Blatt was the chief of the Psychology Section of the Department of Psychiatry (for almost 50 years) at the Yale School of Medicine and visiting scholar at the Austen Riggs Center. The opening remarks of the conference contained fond memories of a remarkable career and early ties between Austen Riggs and the Yale School of Medicine.
Mentioned in the video below, was Dr. Blatt’s collaboration with Richard Q. Ford, Ph.D., Coordinator of Psychological Testing at the Austen Riggs Center. Drs. Blatt and Ford collaborated on the publication of Therapeutic Change: An Object Relations Perspective, 1994, documenting the effectiveness of long-term, inpatient, psychoanalytic psychotherapy of severe mental illness. Dr. Ford had the honor to remark at Dr. Blatt’s retirement from Yale:
As one of many, many collaborators with Sid in important research projects-- ours included perhaps twelve researchers over the course of as many years-- I write to salute Sid for his integrity, his unfailing generosity, his remarkable combination of hard-nosed perseverance and relaxed presence, and his truly amazing blend of clinical sensitivity and research savvy. Working harder that any of us, Sid was unstinting in giving credit to others. Always resourceful, he demonstrated steadily a profound respect for the difficulties of bringing clinical sophistication within the bounds of replicable findings. And how he kept at it! I count our collaboration as one of the finest experiences of my life.
