Kristin Lyon, CTRS, RYT-200, is a group facilitator in the 

 for College Students and Emerging Adults in Massachusetts at the Austen Riggs Center.

As a recreation therapist, Kristin has spent the last 20 years of her career working with individuals to explore the role creativity and play have in caring for one's mental health. Her education and training also allow her to bring an experiential element into the therapeutic process for enhanced exploration and integration of therapeutic concepts as a complement to more traditional forms of talk therapy. 

Kristin is trained in motivational interviewing, CBT-E and sensorimotor psychotherapy, and continues to specialize in trauma treatment. Prior to Riggs, Kristin spent 15 years specializing in eating disorder treatment.

Kristin is also employed by two other behavioral health treatment centers where she facilitates yoga, mindfulness, and meditation groups as well as leads recreation therapy groups, serving adolescents, young adults, and adults enrolled in intensive outpatient programs.

Celeste Martin, RN, is the director of nursing at the Austen Riggs Center. She has worked as a psychiatric RN, as a nurse leader and as a supervisor in adult acute psychiatric settings since 2013.

Celeste enjoys being with her family and playing music in her spare time.

As the admissions clinician and manager, Nicole May, LICSW, oversees the day-to-day operations of the Admissions department, supervises the admissions clinicians, and facilitates the flow of cases. She is directly involved in the admission of almost all incoming patients via the coordination of clinical referrals, assessment and interviewing of patients, and facilitation of needs with other areas of the institution that lead to admission. As the Human Rights Officer, she is involved in educating, advocating for, and assisting patients and staff in exercising their rights in the treatment environment.


In addition to Ms. May’s roles here at Austen Riggs, she is a licensed therapist in private practice in Massachusetts, focused in reproductive mental health. Her involvement in this practice allows her to both bring a broader knowledge and understanding of issues affecting different populations to her work at Riggs, and also for her to bring parts of the psychodynamic approach to the local community.


Since 2018, Ms. May has been involved in fundraising for and participated in the awareness walk for the local chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).

Linda C. Mayes, MD, is a Senior Erikson Scholar in the Erikson Institute for Education, Research, and Advocacy. 

Trained as a pediatrician, Dr. Mayes’s research focuses on stress-response and regulatory mechanisms in young children at both biological and psychosocial risk. She has especially focused on the impact of prenatal substance use on children’s long-term outcomes. She has made contributions to understanding the mechanisms of effect of prenatal stimulant exposure on the ontogeny of arousal regulatory systems and the relation between dysfunctional emotional regulation and impaired prefrontal cortical function in young children. Dr. Mayes has published widely in the developmental psychology, pediatrics, and child psychiatry literature. 

Given the nature of her work with children at significantly high-risk for developmental impairments from both biological and psychosocial etiologies, Dr. Mayes also focuses on the impact of parenting on the development of arousal and attention regulatory mechanisms in their children, and specifically on how substance abuse impacts reward and stress regulatory systems in new parents. With other colleagues in the Center, she studies how adults transition to parenthood, especially when substance abuse is involved, and the basic neural circuitry of early parent-infant attachment using both neuroimaging and electroencephalographic techniques. She and her colleagues have developed a series of interventions for parents including an intensive home-based program called Minding the Baby.

Dr. Mayes's research programs are multidisciplinary, not only in their blending basic science with clinical interventions but also in the disciplines required including adult and child psychiatry, behavioral neuroscience, obstetrics, pediatrics, and neuropsychology.
