As the admissions clinician and manager, Nicole May, LICSW, oversees the day to day operations of the Admissions department and facilitates the flow of cases. She is directly involved in the admission of almost all incoming patients, assessing, educating, and facilitating the process. As the Human Rights and Privacy Officer, she is involved in educating, advocating for, and assisting staff and patients in exercising their rights to privacy and fair treatment.

In addition to Ms. May’s roles here at Austen Riggs, she is involved in crisis assessment and intervention work through her local community mental health clinic. Her involvement with this organization allows her to both bring a broader knowledge and understanding of issues affecting different populations to her work at Riggs, and also for her to bring parts of the psychodynamic approach to the local community.

For the past few years, Ms. May has been involved in fundraising for and participated in the awareness walk for the local chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).

Linda C. Mayes, MD, is a distinguished faculty member in the Erikson Institute for Education, Research, and Advocacy. 

Trained as a pediatrician, Dr. Mayes’s research focuses on stress-response and regulatory mechanisms in young children at both biological and psychosocial risk. She has especially focused on the impact of prenatal substance use on children’s long-term outcomes. She has made contributions to understanding the mechanisms of effect of prenatal stimulant exposure on the ontogeny of arousal regulatory systems and the relation between dysfunctional emotional regulation and impaired prefrontal cortical function in young children. Dr. Mayes has published widely in the developmental psychology, pediatrics, and child psychiatry literature. 

Given the nature of her work with children at significantly high-risk for developmental impairments from both biological and psychosocial etiologies, Dr. Mayes also focuses on the impact of parenting on the development of arousal and attention regulatory mechanisms in their children, and specifically on how substance abuse impacts reward and stress regulatory systems in new parents. With other colleagues in the Center, she studies how adults transition to parenthood, especially when substance abuse is involved, and the basic neural circuitry of early parent-infant attachment using both neuroimaging and electroencephalographic techniques. She and her colleagues have developed a series of interventions for parents including an intensive home-based program called Minding the Baby.

Dr. Mayes's research programs are multidisciplinary, not only in their blending basic science with clinical interventions but also in the disciplines required including adult and child psychiatry, behavioral neuroscience, obstetrics, pediatrics, and neuropsychology.

Kristin L. McLaughlin, PhD, is a staff psychologist who provides psychotherapy and psychological testing at the Austen Riggs Center. McLaughlin also coordinates the Friday Night Guest Lecture Series through Spring, 2024.

Dr. McLaughlin has provided psychotherapy in a number of settings including community mental health centers, university counseling centers, VA medical centers, a state hospital forensic unit, and hospital inpatient and outpatient psychiatry departments. She has taught undergraduate courses on the Psychology of Social Justice and Cultural Diversity, and taught and supervised students in a Masters in Mental Health Counseling graduate program.

Dr. McLaughlin has published and presented research on cultural trauma, including racial and gender-related trauma and the links between systemic oppression and mental health outcomes, especially in relation to racism and sexism. She currently supervises practicing clinicians in community mental health settings.

David Mintz, MD, is a staff psychiatrist who joined the Austen Riggs Center in 1996. He presently serves as the director of psychiatric education, the associate director of training, and as a team leader. He also is principal investigator for the research initiative in Psychodynamic Psychopharmacology and author of the book

Chalice Mitchell is the visual arts instructor in the Activities Program at the Austen Riggs Center.

With degrees from theory-based programs, having studied oil painting in the western tradition and ink painting in Japan, Mx. Mitchell can offer students a wide range of art practices. She supports and encourages students in freely expressing themselves, learning technical skills, visualizing ideas, or just having fun and creating.

Mx. Mitchell has exhibited nationally and internationally, including shows in Tokyo, London, New York, Moscow, Athens, Wellington, and Vancouver. Her work is owned by collectors across the world and she has attended residencies in Japan, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Cathleen M. Morey, PhD, LICSW, is the director of clinical social work at the Austen Riggs Center. She provides direct patient care, family consultation and family therapy, clinical supervision, education and training, case consultation, and administrative management of clinical social work staff.

Dr. Morey has previous clinical social work experience working in a wide range of mental health settings, including an inpatient psychiatric hospital, a correctional facility and community mental health settings.

Dr. Morey has been a volunteer with International Social Work Solutions for several years. ISWS has sponsored Dr. Morey to participate in several social work projects with international partner organizations. She has developed and presented a 2-day virtual Trauma Training Program for staff of a humanitarian NGO in the Democratic Republic of Congo. She has also partnered with a NYC non-profit agency to provide research consultation regarding data analysis of their work with under-resourced diabetic adults living in Uganda.
