Film Forum: Lars and the Real Girl
Austen Riggs Center
Director, Craig Gillespie
Discussion led by Jane Tillman, Ph.D., ABPP
Lars and the Real Girl humorously combines fantasy, reality, and the healing nature of community. Lars is a young man who is painfully shy, anxious, and struggling to face the reality of the death of his parents. His solution to his internal dilemma is to form a relationship with a life-sized doll he names Bianca. In this film, an insightful community suspends reality, joining Lars on his improbable quest to move from isolation to relatedness.
