Farewell Is Not Death: Ending the Treatment of Inpatients Suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder

November 17, 2023 at 12:50 PM to 1:50 PM Eastern
1.0 CME/CE Credit. Free virtual Grand Rounds with Uri Nitzan, MD.
The process of separation from the ward is saturated with emotional challenges for the patient and no less for his caregiver and the staff. This is particularly striking when referring to patients suffering from BPD, who are extremely sensitive to discharge and pose a complex clinical challenge to the staff. Bidding farewell is not a technical procedure but an essential component of the therapeutic process, and at times a matter of life and death. In fact, in our experience the days or weeks prior to discharge are for many patients the most crucial phase in their treatment and recovery. The presentation will focus on the clinical principles and attitude that can aid caregivers in confronting this challenge; clinical vignettes and psychoanalytic concepts will be used to illustrate our therapeutic approach as we help the patient survive the process of separation.
