The Riggs Difference: Where Understanding Leads to Recovery
Edward R. Shapiro, MD, delivers a keynote address at the Autumn Conference of the German Psychoanalytic Association (DPV e.V.).

"The title of this year’s conference, “Finding a Place to Stand”, is inspired by Edward R. Shapiro’s book Finding a Place to Stand. Developing Self-Reflective Institutions, Leaders and Citizens (Phoenix, 2020). This conference theme invites us to reflect on the interplay of individuality and community, on social belonging and alienation, on the function of institutions, and the place of psychoanalysis in society and politics.
As always, we will explore the theme through lectures, forums, working groups, and discussions. We are especially pleased that Edward R. Shapiro, who inspired our theme, will deliver a keynote. We also welcome Martin Teising, former DPV Chair and current IPA Board member, as a keynote speaker.
For the first time, plenary working groups will be held. These plenary groups – one for members, one for candidates – will be facilitated by Renate Grønvold Bugge (Kristiansand, Norway) and Mathias Lohmer (Munich). The aim is not to reach consensus, but to foster communication and open dialogue on questions that affect us all."
