    The Austen Riggs Center is pleased to announce that Medical Director/CEO Andrew J. Gerber, MD, PhD, has been appointed to NAMI Berkshire County’s Board of Directors, deepening the existing relationship between Riggs and the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

  • Austen Riggs Center Erikson Institute Program and Community Outreach Manager Lee Watroba named 2016 NAMI Berkshire County Member of the Year.

    Recently, the Berkshire County chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) named Lee Watroba the recipient of their 2016 Member of the Year Award. Watroba, the Erikson Institute Program and Community Outreach Manager at the Austen Riggs Center, remarked, “This is very meaningful to me; I am very honored. NAMI Berkshire County is an amazing organization doing incredibly important work.”

    Recently, I was invited to participate in Boston College University's Counseling Services Colloquium on Loneliness and presented my ideas regarding “Loneliness and the Capacity to be Alone.” This opportunity allowed me (and others) to address the concern that young adults, who, despite being more “connected” than ever, are increasingly isolated and less able to navigate and nurture successful relationships with others. The colloquium also provided the opportunity to reflect upon my work with patients at Riggs who struggle with these same issues.

    While the field of psychiatry drifted toward more of a biological orientation in the 1990s (“the decade of the brain”) and afterward, the Austen Riggs Center remained committed to the biopsychosocial model, and to the importance of meaning, relationships that continue over time, and respect for the authority and voice of the patient.

    When Barbara Turner Hart, RN, MA, retired from Riggs as the nurse educator in 2015, she did not expect to find herself in the position she is in now: back at Riggs as the director of nursing. But, when she was asked to step in after the retirement of the former director of nursing, Jane Bloom, PhD, she couldn’t say no. Turner Hart remarks, “I’m excited about providing leadership for and promoting the hard work of nursing in this unique psychiatric setting.”
