Director of Training Jennifer Stevens, PhD, Receives Board Certification in Psychoanalysis
The Austen Riggs Center is pleased to announce that Riggs clinician and Director of Training Jennifer Stevens, PhD, has become board certified in psychoanalysis by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP).
Incorporated in 1947 with the support of the American Psychological Association (APA), the ABPP “assures the public that specialists designated by the ABPP have successfully completed the educational, training and experience requirements of the specialty, including an examination designed to assess the competencies required to provide quality services in that specialty.” Specialty certification in psychoanalysis has been offered by the ABPP since 1996.
Director of the Erikson Institute and Riggs psychologist Jane G. Tillman, PhD, ABPP, remarked “For psychologists, the ABPP certification recognizes a high level of competence and is a mark of professional achievement.”
With Dr. Stevens’ certification, the Austen Riggs Center now has seven members of the medical staff who are certified in psychoanalysis either by the ABPP or the American Board of Psychoanalysis (ABP): Marilyn Charles, PhD; M. Gerard Fromm, PhD; John P. Muller, PhD; Edward R. Shapiro, MD, Jennifer Stevens, PhD; Jane G. Tillman, PhD; and Elizabeth Weinberg, MD.
Speaking about the path to certification, Dr. Stevens stated “Though this process began as a requirement of my role, the opportunity to reflect on a case in-depth, as well as on my professional development and relationship to psychoanalysis, was important and useful. Similarly, the oral exam process - which was serious, thoughtful and even enjoyable – was affirming.”
As an institution with deep ties to psychoanalysis, strong values of psychoanalytic thought and practice and an ACPEinc-accredited four-year post-doctoral Fellowship, Dr. Stevens’ certification highlights both her commitment and Riggs’ ongoing commitment to a high standard of clinical excellence and is illustrative of Riggs’ environment of continued learning and professional development.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Stevens on her accomplishment.
