Riggs responds to student privacy and depression on campus

Parents worry about the mental health of their children as they send them off to school. Educators and counselors worry about how much they can prevent school violence while protecting the privacy of their students. Austen Riggs Center Medical Director/CEO and expert on adolescent development, family functioning and treatment systems, Edward R. Shapiro, MD, responds to recent student suicides and school violence, the role of school counselors, administration, parents, and the legal system in the March 24, 2007 Wall Street Journal article, “After a Suicide, Privacy on Trial,” and Letter to the Editor, “Student Suicides: Privacy Rules Must be Tempered by Common Sense,” published April 16, 2007.

Dr. Edward Shapiro comments on the dilemma of dealing with depression, isolation, suicide and violence on college campuses in this US News and World Report story.
