In February, we posted information about Riggs helping to establish a Psychotherapy Caucus within the APA . Well, the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) 167th Annual Meeting begins on Saturday, May 3rd in New York City and the inaugural meeting of the Psychotherapy Caucus will occur during this meeting on Monday, May 5th from 3:00 to 5:00pm at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel, 811 Seventh Avenue , Lower Lobby, Conference Room E.
According to APA Assembly member, Caucus leader and Riggs Associate Medical Director, Eric Plakun, M.D., the purpose of the Caucus is “to create a forum within the Association where the voice of psychiatrists interested in psychotherapy could be heard.” To that end, the activities of the Caucus may include networking, research-sharing, program development, mentoring and more.
The evidence base for the efficacy of psychotherapy is growing and Riggs is proud to have some of our psychiatrists, Eric Plakun, Elizabeth Weinberg, David Flynn, and Samar Habl, play central roles in creating the Caucus to promote the importance of psychotherapy within psychiatry.
Worth noting, for those who are interested in both seeing Vice President Joe Biden deliver the William C. Menninger Memorial Convocation Lecture at 2:00 pm at the Javits Convention Center AND attend the Psychotherapy Caucus, live feed TV screens will be set up at APA hotels, so you can avoid long security lines and limited space and watch the Vice President’s remarks live from the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel before the Caucus.
You can read more about the Psychotherapy Caucus in this April 4, 2014 article from Psychiatric News: New Caucus to Promote Value of Psychotherapy Treatment (PLEASE NOTE: the time referenced in the article is INCORRECT – the correct time is 3:00-5:00pm).
