Board chair, Lisa A. Raskin, Ph.D., recently announced the appointment of James L. Sacksteder, M.D. as the new medical director/CEO. A board certified psychiatrist, Dr. Sacksteder has been a dedicated and inspired clinician and leader whose commitment to the Austen Riggs Center spans more than thirty years. Dr. Sacksteder has served as the associate medical director and director of patient care since 1989. During that time he has overseen the successful treatment of hundreds of patients. He has presented and published on such topics as anorexia nervosa, narcissism, and long-term psychoanalytically-oriented psychotherapy of severely disturbed patients. Dr. Sacksteder was a lecturer at Smith College School of Social Work for over twenty years.
In a letter announcing the changes, Dr. Raskin indicated that the Board extends appreciation to outgoing medical director/CEO Donald Rosen, M.D., who has decided to pursue other professional opportunities. Dr. Rosen’s commitment to education, training and research was evident throughout his tenure at Riggs. In 2012, Austen Riggs Center was once again recognized as one of US News’ Best Hospitals in Psychiatry—this time in the top ten!
Dr. Sacksteder was appointed to serve as Austen Riggs Center’s next medical director/CEO, by unanimous vote of the board. Dr. Raskin further remarked that “In addition to being an exceptional leader with impeccable credentials, Dr. Sacksteder has a keen understanding of the mission and culture of the institution that have made Riggs one of the most respected psychiatric hospitals in the nation. We consider Dr. Sacksteder ideally suited to lead Riggs into the future.”
