Dr. Edward R. Shapiro Awarded Outstanding Psychiatrist of the Year by Massachusetts Psychiatric Society

Stockbridge, Massachusetts – The Austen Riggs Center, a not-for-profit open psychiatric hospital in Stockbridge, Massachusetts is pleased to announce that Medical Director/CEO Edward R. Shapiro, M.D. received the award for Outstanding Psychiatrist of the Year in the category of “Advancement of the Profession,” from the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society (MPS). A total of six awards were presented at the MPS Annual Meeting, held on May 3, in Waltham, Massachusetts. The other categories are: Research, Lifetime Achievement, Clinical Psychiatry, and Psychiatric Education.

The Award Committee is annually challenged with selecting five or six “Outstanding Psychiatrists” from among the entire membership of 1,700. The MPS represents psychiatric physicians for professional support, education, advocacy and practice development. MPS members are physicians who are committed to providing outstanding medical/psychiatric care through accurate diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of mental health and emotional illnesses.

At the awards ceremony, MPS President Robert L. Pyles, MD stated, “In 1991 at a time when managed care was making long-term inpatient care virtually impossible Dr. Shapiro took on the challenge of becoming Medical Director and CEO of the Austen Riggs Center. Under his leadership Riggs has not only survived but thrived as a unique facility in the country providing long-term psychoanalytically oriented treatment.”

Dr. Shapiro is a board certified psychiatrist and Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. A psychoanalyst, family researcher, and organizational consultant, Dr. Shapiro is a Training and Supervising Analyst and Founding Member of the Psychoanalytic Society and Institute of the Berkshires. An organizational consultant for over 25 years, Dr. Shapiro has consulted with hospitals, mental health clinics, law firms, and family businesses.

Dr. Shapiro has published over 50 articles and book chapters on human development, organizational and family functioning, and personality disorders, presenting papers in the country and abroad. A Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, he is also a Fellow of the A.K. Rice Institute and the American College of Psychoanalysis.
