An intensive examination of the creative process, through the
reflections of artists, scholars and clinicians. Join Tina Packer,
Artistic Director of Shakespeare & Company, Poet April Bernard, Dancer Nina Watt from the Limon Dance Company, Othello expert Peter Erickson, 20/20 segment producer Jeffrey Diamond and Riggs clinicians in this interactive seminar, which also includes a performance of Othello at Shakespeare & Co.
“Chaos is come again.” The words are from Othello. It’s a play not only about race, but also about apparent difference, real difference and underlying commonality. It’s about imagining “outside the box” and anxiously staying within it. Perhaps it is also about a tragic aspect of creativity – the human inclination to psychologically create others, often without knowing it, into the darker images of ourselves and then to violently separate from them - at the cost of losing more complex, potentially creative aspects of both people.
At a high-stakes, political moment when a Black man and a white woman invite us to imagine creative societal change, and when an older white man speaks about the chaos that might come from it, what happens to the creative process as it is felt and lived out by individuals? How do change, personal or societal, and its accompanying chaos affect creativity, and vice versa? How are projection and the encounter with difference a part of creativity? Is creativity a renewable resource for the individual and for society, and what renews it?
The Creativity Seminar will take up these questions as part of our basic task of examining the creative process. We will build on the first-hand experiences of artists, the reflections of scholars, the perspective of clinicians and interactive work with seminars members to deepen our learning about creativity. The seminar will also include attendance at a performance of Othello at Shakespeare and Co.
