Family consultationThe Austen Riggs Center, a psychiatric hospital/residential treatment program with a completely voluntary and open setting, seeks a clinical social worker to serve as an integral member of the interdisciplinary psychodynamic treatment team.
This position provides a unique career opportunity at one of the best hospitals in psychiatry in the nation as rated by U.S. News and World Report. The Riggs treatment approach centers around the importance of therapeutic, peer and family relationships, patient authority and the meaning of symptoms. Working with psychiatrically complex patients and their families, social workers conduct patient and family assessments, provide family education, consultation and family therapy; as well as dynamic casework services for patients including discharge planning. Social workers can enhance and broaden their clinical practice through intensive clinical supervision and multiple learning venues.

Social workers are immersed in an intellectually stimulating learning environment that values and supports ongoing professional development. Intensive clinical supervision is provided along with multiple learning opportunities and resources to pursue additional clinical interests such as group work, interdisciplinary committee work, research, presenting at conferences, writing for publication and participation in seminars and conferences, as well as opportunities to learn from guest lecturers and visiting scholars.

As a member of the medical staff, you will work side by side with clinicians who are passionate and committed to the Riggs’ clinical mission that encompasses patient authority, relationships, meaning and context. 


  • MSW or PhD with LCSW or LICSW
  • Massachusetts license or eligibility
  • Three years post-MSW experience
  • Specific training and clinical experience as a family therapist preferable
  • Clinical social work experience from a psychodynamic perspective preferable
