The Riggs Blog is a mix of news about clinical work, research and educational activities from the Austen Riggs Center, as well as a source for information beyond our walls that we find interesting and thought-provoking.
Individual and group identities may be thought of as occurring at the intersection of literal and metaphorical place(s). The 2014 Fall Conference at Riggs explored the various meanings of place in relation to identity. In a global world, our capacity to “be” in several places at once, to travel to other places via technology and to experience place in a more diverse and complex manner shapes our identity and our identifications in complex ways. In this conference, participants learned together about the social and clinical implications of these shifting experiences of place and identity.
Neil Hilborn's Youtube video of his poem entitled "OCD" quickly became an internet sensation. It takes a lot of courage on the part of people, whether or not they are patients at Austen Riggs or elsewhere, to risk translating their behavior into words.
Many people considering psychotherapy ask this question. Dr. Margaret Parish explains where psychotherapists can help to understand past events and their contexts, offering guidance and perspectives as a person reviews what he or she has suffered.
Recipients of the 2013 Erikson Prize for Excellence in Mental Health Media will present their work on mental health issues in the media. Presentations will be followed by a discussion with the audience around reporting on mental health and stigma, the challenges on reporting on trauma and how journalists think about a range of clinical perspectives that press for public discussion.
