U.S. News & World Report Names the Austen Riggs Center in the Top Ten Best Hospitals in Psychiatry

Washington, D.C. – July 16, 2013 − The Austen Riggs Center has been ranked as one of the ten best hospitals for 2013-14 in Psychiatry again this year by U.S. News & World Report. The annual U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients. U.S. News annually surveys nearly 10,000 specialists inquiring about various factors including hospital reputation and patient safety.  The report is a result of sifting through such data for 5,000 hospitals.

The Austen Riggs Center has an intensive clinical program serving those struggling with mental illness.  Patients come to the Austen Riggs Center from throughout the United States.  The hospital is dedicated to caring for adults, 18 years and older, who contend with a variety of illnesses including depression, anxiety, bipolar, psychotic and personality disorders. Additionally, the Austen Riggs Center provides education and research through its Erikson Institute.  Medical Director/CEO, James Sacksteder, M.D. comments:  “We are very pleased to again be ranked in the top ten list for hospitals in psychiatry.  Our small size, open, voluntary setting and psychodynamic focus give patients the time, space and context they need to get better.  This honor stems from the hard work done daily by our extraordinary clinical staff.”

U.S. News evaluates hospitals in 16 adult specialties. In most specialties, it ranks the nation’s top 50 hospitals and recognizes other high-performing hospitals that provide care at nearly the level of their nationally ranked peers.

“A hospital that emerges from our analysis as one of the best has much to be proud of,” said Avery Comarow, U.S. News Health Rankings Editor. “Only about 15 percent of hospitals are recognized for their high performance as among their region’s best. Just three percent of all hospitals earn a national ranking in any specialty.”

The rankings have been published at http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals and will appear in print in the U.S. News Best Hospitals 2014 guidebook.
