A systems approach is needed to care for complex problems facing returning veterans

This country is only now beginning to fathom the magnitude of issues that surround the multidimensional nature of combat and operational stress exposure, according to Dr. Stephen Xenakis, who closed this year’s Erikson Institute Fall Conference on Trauma and Moral Injury. Xenakis brought home the sobering fact that the fragmented system of care now in place is ill-prepared to treat the complex medical and psychological problems of returning troops. He also pointed to merit of  Riggs’ systems approach and integrated clinical work.
