What is the Role of Nursing in the Riggs Treatment Model? – Part 1

Nursing care is available 24/7 at the residential setting of Austen Riggs.  Every patient is assigned a nursing care coordinator who is also a member of the treatment team. Nursing staff member, Brian O’Gara, discusses the role of nursing in a three part video series.

In Part 1, Brian discusses the role of nursing, which includes working with patients in “the here and now” with “support, respect and authenticity.” Part of the care may be helping patients recognize and articulate what they are feeling or helping them process the feelings that are arising in their therapy or their interactions with other patients. He also talks about the most gratifying part of his work.

Check back next week for Part 2: Treatment in a Therapeutic Community at the Austen Riggs Center.
