Dr. Edward Shapiro, former Medical Director/CEO of the Austen Riggs Center Personality disorders (including borderline personality disorder) are one of the most common diagnoses patients contend with when seeking residential treatment at the Austen Riggs Center. Many of our clinicians present and publish widely on personality disorders, as well as many other topics. In an effort to share learning and generate conversation, Riggs curates a broad selection of resources on our website.

One such resource is our online continuing education platform. Recently, senior consultant to the Erikson Institute for Education and Research and former Riggs Medical Director/CEO Edward R. Shapiro, MD, recorded a course that is available to mental health professionals and students:

Developmental and Family Issues in Severe Personality Disorders: An Overview

As the abstract of the course states:

“This lecture offers a developmental and contextual view of severe personality disorders. Focusing on the patient's presentation, underlying defenses and countertransference, Dr. Shapiro uses these as entry points into understanding the origins of personality disorders in childhood, and in the interaction between the developing child and the family. With specific examples, he outlines projective identification, object relations theory, the nature of containment and a sequence of treatment options.”

Online continuing education courses are offered “on demand” and without charge for mental health professionals and students. Registration is required and allows registrants to see their courses and transcripts.
