Online Continuing Education for Physicians, Psychologists and Social Workers Now Available
We are pleased to announce an online continuing education platform, available on our website, where psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers can obtain continuing medical education/continuing education credit. If you are not a member of one of these guilds, you are still welcome to take any of the course offerings.
The Erikson Institute for Education and Research of the Austen Riggs Center is committed to providing a place for psychoanalytic education, research, and community engagement. The Austen Riggs Center has been in operation since 1919 and has been a training institution since 1924, pioneering the theory and technique of psychodynamic treatment with complex psychiatric patients. Our educational approach takes a systems perspective on treatment, emphasizing cultural and familial contexts as well as individual development.
The online platform is located at www.austenriggs.org/courses. To take courses, users simply need to register, provide their credentials, then log on and select the course they would like to take. Once registered, users’ courses and transcripts are available online, on demand. Current course offerings include recent conference presentations by Andrew Solomon, Scott Stossel and David Finkel as well as Riggs clinicians presenting on the topics of psychopharmacology, issues in psychiatry, the DSM 5, interdisciplinary treatment teams and more. There are ten courses currently available, with more in development.
Jane Tillman, PhD, director of the Erikson Institute remarks, “Our clinicians are frequent presenters at national and international conferences and give grand rounds in teaching hospitals, typically reaching a limited number of people at the specific venue. Our goal with the online continuing education platform is to reach more people who don’t ordinarily have easy access to psychodynamic education and provide them with a convenient high quality offering.”
To summarize, the online continuing education platform contains a registration process, a menu of courses with abstracts, the courses (video and audio), quizzes appropriate for the specific professional guild, a certificate of completion and a personalized online transcript. Courses will be added and augmented periodically.
Our continuing education courses are accredited by the Massachusetts Medical Society to provide continuing medical education (CME) for physicians, approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education (CE) for psychologists and each of our courses have been approved for CE credit by the Smith College School of Social Work. Lifelong learners interested in psychodynamic psychotherapy, medical and graduate students and other mental health professionals are encouraged to participate.
