Research

The Austen Riggs Research Department is dedicated to the study of the biological, psychological, social and cultural aspects of Austen Riggs Center psychiatric patients. Under the leadership of Dr. Christopher Fowler, the department draws upon the intellectual environment at Riggs, and aims to support and develop a range of research interests among the clinical staff members. Empirical research, clinical writing and interdisciplinary collaborations that reflect the Erikson Institute’s mission promote research in psychodynamic thought and treatment and foster the study of human development and the larger society.

In 2009, the research department implemented five unique research labs, each with credentialed staff members in the area of concentration as follows: Dr. Jane Tillman and Dr. Christopher Fowler leading the Suicide and Self-Destructive Behavior Lab; Dr. David Mintz and Dr. Samar Habl leading the Psychodynamic Psychopharmacology Lab; Dr. Marilyn Charles and Dr. Jill Clemence leading the Psychosis Lab; Cathleen Morey, LICSW and Cynthia Mulder, LICSW leading the Family Systems Lab; and Dr. Christopher Fowler and Dr. Jill Clemence leading the Treatment Efficacy and Treatment Resistance Lab.
