A challenging and rewarding environment

In addition to developing competence as a psychotherapist by working intensively with very troubled patients, Fellows develop an extensive skill set, including the ability to:

  • Integrate psychological and neurobiologic understandings of the patient, and appreciate the ways in which the familial and social context can influence the development of severe mental illness.
  • Work effectively as a competent psychiatrist and creative psychopharmacologist, dealing with complex patients who have proven resistant to most available medications.
  • As a clinical psychologist, become expert in administering and interpreting a battery of psychological tests.
  • Work with large and small groups in the therapeutic community to grasp the complex interaction of group and individual psychology.
  • Understand organizational dynamics, which positions the Fellow to consult to managers and organizations about systems problems.
  • Engage in psychodynamic research and clinical writing to communicate what is learned through this intensive study of disturbed patients.
