Mental Health Worker

Full Time Evening Shift

Rotating weekends and holidays

Working under the supervision of the Charge Nurse, the Mental Health Worker is responsible for the provision of a safe and growth promoting community environment at the Inn. The focus is on the establishment of a therapeutic relationship that maximizes the dignity of individual patients through support of their healthy, adaptive functioning consistent with cultural, spiritual and age-specific considerations. The position maintains a working knowledge of the patient’s behavior, activities and schedule, utilizing his/her personality, interpersonal and group skills and theoretical knowledge in a purposeful goal directed manner to enhance the patient’s potential for modifying problematic thoughts, feelings and behavior.

Required qualifications include:

  • B.A. or B.S. in psychology or related field practice; comparable work experience required if no degree is held.
  • CPR, non-violent assertiveness training, current medical assessment and skills technique required.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of people and maintain patients’ rights at all times.
  • Ability to use computer, telephone, fax and other office equipment.
  • Sitting for long periods of time.
  • Physical stamina needed for travel, organizing events, evening work and weekends.
  • Ability to concentrate despite interruptions, to tolerate anxiety and to remain reflective under stress, to make use of one’s own affects and to use them in the service of responding in role.

Admissions Coordinator

40 hours per week; 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Monday through Friday

The Admissions Coordinator establishes initial contacts with inquirers, inviting interest in the Austen Riggs Center, documenting all contact information. The Coordinator assists in the admissions process, ensuring appropriate and timely communications with relevant staff, and maintains personal contact with potential admission either directly or with referring individuals throughout the pre-consultation process. For assigned doctors, ensures medical transcription is provided in an accurate, efficient and timely manner using proper grammar. This position also gathers clinical information from referring doctors and patients and carries out pre-certification and other insurance reviews in the absence or unavailability of the Admissions Clinician.

Required qualifications include:

  • High school graduate or equivalent. Associates degree preferred.
  • Minimum three years secretarial experience with demonstrated working knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Previous experience in a healthcare environment with working knowledge of a hospital admissions process and familiarity with mental health disorders and treatment and with utilization review strongly preferred.
  • Proven experience in word processing, office skills, mail distribution, telephone, Excel, Microsoft, databases. Skilled in grammar, proofreading and spelling.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently, and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of people and maintain patients’ rights at all times.
  • Sitting for prolonged periods of time. Lifting files, climbing stairs, extensive computer work. Mobility required moving around facility.
  • Ability to concentrate for long periods. Ability to prioritize and organize work, i.e.: medical transcription for several doctors plus admissions duties.
  • Ability to use computer, telephone, fax machine, copy machine and other office equipment.

Data Manager/Research Assistant II

32-40 hours per week

Coordinates the data-sharing process of the Research Department, Assists in developing systems for creating, updating, organizing, integrating and cleaning databases; Serves as a team member on subprojects designated by the Director of Research; Builds productive collaborations with researchers within the Center.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years experience directly related to research, managing research data input, management and database organization.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer programs, such as Word, PowerPoint, SAS, SPSS and Excel.
  • Experience importing and exporting data in SAS and SPSS.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to work effectively with others and maintain patients’ rights at all times.
  • Manual dexterity necessary for computer use. Ability to use office equipment, to include telephone, copiers and fax machine, as well as audiovisual equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 10 pounds. May require sitting for extended periods of time.
